Frans Joel is born in Sweden, but is taken to Minnesota by his parents in 1905. At first, he is called Frank in America, but later he generally appears as Joseph Francis Jacobson. Sometime during the 1920s he moves in with his brother Axel and his family and works as a farm labourer on their farm.

He does not appear to have married.
