Hulda grows up at her parents’ farm in Viking townshipicon-map-marker, Minnesota. In 1920, she is no longer at home with her parents, and neither is she with her brothers and sisters at her brother’s farm. In 1930, however, she has returned home.

Around 1935 she marries Paul Engen, who is also from Viking. He has returned alive from two months of service in WWI 1918-1919 and has worked as a welder in Detroit, but now finds work as a janitor at a bank building.

Paul’s signature in 1918.

They have at least two sons, but the first is stillborn.
